SUMMARY:American History Book Club
DESCRIPTION:July History Book Club:  Readers  choice: \nA Secret Life:  The Lies\, and Scandals of President Grover Cleveland \nThe child was born on September 14\, 1874\, at the only hospital in Buffalo\, New York\, that offered maternity services for unwed mothers. It was a boy\, and though he entered the world in a state of illegitimacy\, a distinguished name was given to this newborn: Oscar Folsom Cleveland. The son of the future president of the United States—Grover Cleveland. The story of how the man who held the nation’s highest office eventually came to take responsibility for his son is a thrilling one that reads like a sordid romance novel—including allegations of rape\, physical violence\, and prostitution. The stunning lengths that Cleveland undertook to conceal what really happened the evening of his son’s conception are truly astonishing—including forcing the unwed mother\, Maria Halpin\, into an insane asylum. \nA Secret Life also finally reveals what happened to Grover Cleveland’s son. Some historians have suggested that he became an alcoholic and died a young man—but Lachman definitively establishes his fate here for the first time. In this gripping historical narrative\, Charles Lachman sets the scandal-plagued record straight with a tightly-coiled plot that provides for narrative history at its best. \nOR \nAn Honest President:  The Life and Presidencies of Grover Cleveland \nA biography of the only president to be elected to non-consecutive terms reveals a tough\, honest\, courageous leader who took responsibility for his actions and wasn’t afraid to take on corruption where he saw it.

SUMMARY:American History Book Club
DESCRIPTION:June American History selection: \nDestiny of the Republic \nJames A. Garfield was one of the most extraordinary men ever elected president. Born into abject poverty\, he rose to become a wunderkind scholar\, a Civil War hero\, and a renowned and admired reformist congressman. Nominated for president against his will\, he engaged in a fierce battle with the corrupt political establishment. But four months after his inauguration\, a deranged office seeker tracked Garfield down and shot him in the back. But the shot didn’t kill Garfield. The drama of what happened subsequently is a powerful story of a nation in tur-moil. The unhinged assassin’s half-delivered strike shattered the fragile national mood of a country so recently fractured by civil war\, and left the wounded president as the object of a bitter behind-the-scenes struggle for power over his administration\, over the nation’s future\, and\, hauntingly\, over his medical care. A team of physicians administered shockingly archaic treatments\, to disastrous effect. As his condition worsened\, Garfield received help: Alexander Graham Bell\, the inventor of the telephone\, worked around the clock to invent a new device capable of finding the bullet. Meticulously researched\, epic in scope\, and pulsating with an intimate human focus and high-velocity narrative drive\, The Destiny of the Republic will stand alongside The Devil in the White City and The Professor and the Madman as a classic of narrative history.

SUMMARY:AMERICAN HISTORY BOOK CLUB
DESCRIPTION:Our Roots are Deep was published in 1974 by Muriel Mueller Milne. It remains today the most thorough and comprehensive history of the Village of Monee and its people in existence. Muriel Sophie Marie Mueller was born in Monee to Emmet and Esther (Jacobs) Mueller on March 10\, 1922. She was baptized and confirmed at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ. On June 29\, 1947 she married Willam Henry Milne\, the son of Alexander and Dorothea (Grote) Milne. She served as Editor of the Monee Monitor from 1963-1969\, and was an accomplished artist; many of her works gracing the walls of homes in Monee and the surrounding areas. Fascinated by Monee’s pioneer history\, Muriel served as chairman of the Monee Centennial Committee and was a huge part of it’s planning and execution. Monee’s Centennial Celebration was in 1974\, which coincided with the publishing of her incredible book about Monee. The scope of the information contained in Our Roots are Deep is especially impressive given the time and limitations she faced in the early 1970’s\, when genealogy and this type of research was in its infancy. There was no internet to aid in her fact finding. She must have conducted dozens of interviews to get all the information she included in her book. The hours of painstaking note-taking and record-gathering undertaken would have been in the hundreds of hours. Sadly\, Muriel died November 29\, 1974\, only months after her book was published. She was buried in Skyline Cemetery\, just north of Monee\, on December 1\, 1974. As a result of her work\, many future generations have been helped and informed by her book and her legacy to Monee will never be forgotten.
